With another approach to hit the tennis balls, at that point the ball went under reproduction and update seeing as the principal tennis ball was wooden. Before long the new ball was bouncier, it was made of cowhide loaded up with cellulose material. The sport of tennis before long turned out to be extremely mainstream in Europe, at that point in france as it was embraced by the imperial family. The game spread like rapidly spreading fire to various pieces of the world like, Russia, Canada, India and China. Despite the fact that Wingfieldââ¬â¢s variant of the tennis courts and rules of the game experienced a numerous progressions until it offered route to the cutting edge form of tennis we play today. The most punctual of birthplaces of tennis are supposed to involve ââ¬Å"some dispute.â⬠Some accept that the old Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were the first to play tennis, however no drawings or depictions to demonstrate this data has ever been found. One this we do know is a couple of Arabic words dating from old Egyptian occasions are refered to as proof. The name tennis originates from the Egyptian town, Tinnis and the word racquet is Arabic for palm of the hand. Beside those two words, proof to demonstrate any type of the game tennis being played or made the year 1000 is missing, and a great many people and antiquarians credit the main roots to the French. Answer: Presentation In each association, human asset is the most significant and dependable resource. Human asset lives in the abilities, information, and inspiration of all staff. It is a scant asset that improves with age and experience. Because of changing financial circumstances, generational inspiration has changed. To guarantee that staff stays profitable and effective, firms have played a job train their laborers to guarantee they can stay aware of new patterns. The current business condition has been tired of cutting edge and refined innovations that require the foundation of good ways to deal with HR to make an upper hand over the equaling firms. This report tries to investigate the different ages, their disparities, and how these qualifications sway on the human asset. It additionally assesses Briscoes commitment technique for its laborers. Generational Background In a financial perspective, individuals have been arranged into ages. These ages were separated into timespans separated by different qualities. The downturn period, conceived between years 1912-1921, is the original distinguished. Individuals in this time were extraordinary savers, traditionalist and wanted to keep negligible obligations (Chase-Lansdale, Kiernan, Friedman, 2004). They needed to leave inheritances for their kids, were devoted, faithful, work situated and had regard for power. The accompanying age was conceived between 1922-1922. The World War 2 time was included individuals that battled for a shared objective, however they enjoyed delaying. Post-war associate, then again, had many openings for work since the economy was blasting. Notwithstanding, the virus war started, and individuals esteemed security and favored increasingly recognizable conditions. The boomer bunch tailed it (Chase-Lansdale, Kiernan, Friedman, 2004). The Boomer age was partitioned into two. The principal had genuine financial chances, and individuals were exceptionally hopeful. They additionally had trust in the legislature as the pioneers at that point assisted with joining them after the war (Chase-Lansdale, Kiernan, Friedman, 2004). In any case, the subsequent gathering lost trust in their administrations, had more regrettable financial open doors however kept up the positive thinking. These gatherings varied in their perspectives, practices and had diverse educational encounters. The last gathering was shadowed by the previous. Age X conceived between years 1966-1976 followed. It is alluded to as the lost gathering since its youngsters were presented to separation and day care. These individuals were exceptionally incredulous but at the same time were named the best instructed. They were mindful about family by evading divorces and were acceptable monetary organizers (Chase-Lansdale, Kiernan, Friedman, 2004). Age Y which is the biggest age includes individuals conceived between1977-1994. This gathering is racially various, politically withdrew, materialistic, and narrow minded and uses innovation. The utilization of the web has made them increasingly adaptable (Twenge Campbell, 2009). This age pays accentuation to extraneous qualities, for example, picture, fortune, and popularity while self-acknowledgment and collaboration are not given a lot of thought. In any case, it has positive qualities, for example, receptiveness, self-expressive, certain, innovative and liberal. Segment Characteristics of Generation Y Sex uniformity practiced by individuals in this gathering is one of the key highlights that make it stand apart from the past age. Both genders are given equivalent possibilities in instruction and work environments. This is the explanation that age Y has recorded high instruction levels for the two sexual orientations. In working environments, the two ladies and men seek similar chances (Shandler, 2009). Demeanor Characteristics of Generation Y Contrasted with different ages, this gathering has indicated resistance and convenience for contrasts in points of view and personalities. It is racially various and has little respect for governmental issues. Plus, it is socially substandard contrasted with its forerunners. But its social demeanor, age Y is depicted to be an adaptable gathering, inventive, and liberal (Shandler, 2009). Its usage of the web has helped this group to stay aware of new patterns contrasted with the past ages. It is additionally known to be certain and acceptable in correspondence and articulation. Be that as it may, age Y have a feeling of privilege. It, in this way, exceptionally depends on its folks for money related and enthusiastic help. This dependence is obvious in their training and working spots (Armstrong, 2014). Guardians have helped shape the bearing of their examinations and supported them in dynamic advancement in their working environment. Suggestions on Human Resource The attributes of Generation Y have affected both decidedly and adversely on human asset. On the positive viewpoint, this gathering is known to be idealistic, have exclusive standards and is very much educated on the specialized parts of their occupations. Age Y is receptive to preparing and works productively since it is known to be certain (Shandler, 2009). Equivalent chances to the two sexes guarantee that organizations pull in qualified work force by exploiting prevalent characteristics. Moreover, its adaptability encourages it to stay aware of changing business patterns. In any case, its mentality has negatively affected the human asset. This gathering comes up short on the inspiration required by firms to guarantee the human asset is beneficial. Age Y needs aspiration in profession and wants to seek after its own advantage (Armstrong, 2014). It doesn't distinguish itself with an association yet rather with its activity and, accordingly, sabotages cooperation. Briscoes Engagement Strategy Briscoe bunch commitment methodology targets helping laborers in retail to get ready for what's to come. It plans to diminish representative turnover. This methodology presented on-work preparing program where laborers were prepared and granted on progress. Briscoe bunch accepts that an association can't manage the cost of not to prepare and it would better to have prepared representatives who leave than holding oblivious ones (Noe, 2006). Since fusing this program, Briscoe bunch has had a sensational drop in representative turnover, increment in deals and enrollment crusades drawing in quality candidates. Key Success Factors This system has worked for Briscoe bunch because of some key components. They incorporate; Representatives were permitted to work through the substance of their preparation at their pace. This guaranteed laborers are not hurried through the preparation procedure thus would holding substance and aptitudes learned. Preparing and improvement of the faculty have affected fundamentally on the profitability of Briscoe gathering and in this way ought to be kept up. Staff supervisors offered backing to the preparation program by giving the representatives downtime to consider. This causes representatives to focus and advance comprehension. Adequate opportunity to ponders improved execution the piece of every departmental supervisor as they can investigate distinctively the methods assembled in the preparation procedure. Training staff recognized the zones that laborers required help. They helped them to enhance their shortcomings subsequently giving them more certainty to complete errands. Training of the work force improves their qualities and makes open doors for imagination over new business approaches which empower the firm to contend favorably. Elective Strategies Briscoe bunch utilized a preparation situated program to improve workers execution and lessens turnover. Nonetheless, different methodologies have been proposed. Correspondence assists with building collaboration and inspire laborers (Hundley, Jacobs, Drizin, 2009). Administrators need to guarantee that workers feel included by thinking about their input. Furthermore, correspondence assists with recognizing issues in a firm and hand-off desires (Werner DeSimone, 2006). This technique has expanded creation and dispersion. Motivations and acknowledgment of representatives are different other options. Appropriate compensation for representatives particularly the young gives adequate inspiration (Noe, 2007). Prizes given for acknowledgment of good execution energizes and inspire the staff. Propelled representatives have their resolve on embraced their jobs and obligations inside the work environment revived, and this prompts the general achievement of the organization. Estimation of Briscoes Engagement Results Briscoe bunch examination and assessment of commitment result are suitable. It gauges the outcomes by contrasting the exhibition of its workers and those of different firms. This diminishes inclination in evaluation (Noe, 2007). Additionally, it thinks about the input from clients and the mentors. They utilized record records as numeric proof of the improvement in their laborers execution. A portion of the instruments utilized Briscoe in estimating the presentation of workers incorporate the representatives rating each other, self-examinations, and the executives evaluations (Sandler, 2009). These activity execution assessment procedures help Briscoe bunch decide the measures of remuneration appropriate for various staff under various divisions precisely and undertaking differing obligations inside the associations working environment. End This report is a nitty gritty investigation of human asset. Human asset is a critical component for the achievement of an association. It investigates the current age that frames an enormous piece of the accessible workforce, its differentiation from different associates and the effect of this distinctions on human asset. It additionally assesses the commitment procedure by Briscoe gathering and the components that prompted its prosperity. It distinguishes correspondence and compensation as other elective methodologies that can be utilized to improve the effectiveness of laborers and supports Briscoes method of estimating commitment results. In this manner, the administration of business endeavors ought to empower the support and reconciliation of jobs and duties completed by various human reso Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102301255691821414noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-597297064792177822.post-24181295373797573742020-08-22T18:41:00.001-07:002020-08-22T18:41:10.671-07:00Business Decision Analysis Analysis or Decision Analysis (DA)Question: Examine about the Business Decision Analysis for Analysis or Decision Analysis (DA). He develops it in such an unpretentious way, that it is difficult to distinguish any sequential request of the plot. Time doesn't stream a straight way yet take a roundabout bearing with the advancement of story. Shortcoming deliberately or unwittingly doesn't fret about explicit dates. A bunch of express dates are refered to in the story. Be that as it may, these signs uncover as a lot of data about the direct order of the vents. Faulknerââ¬â¢s idea of time and its viable use doesn't debilitate the story however it is the most evident quality of its plot, development and topical articulations. In spite of the fact that introduction of time as such is for the most part related is dependent upon philosophical direction of the creator yet it had profound effect on the plot. He converges past into present and present into past and this component of the story enthralls the peruser. ââ¬Å"Faulkner gives the story an order, however as with such a large number of his accounts, we need to sort it outâ⬠(McGlynn 461); Furthermore, it prevents the plan of readerââ¬â¢s judgment about Emily till the end. The impacts of this non-direct sequence on the story are flawlessly summarized by McGlynn (1969). He says that ââ¬Å"A sequence of ââ¬ËA Rose for Emilyââ¬â¢ is valuable for in any event two reasons: it makes the plot all the more effectively intelligible, and it explains the capacity of time in the storyâ⬠(461). By dodging an unmistakable and direct sequential request of occasions, Faulkner endeavors to give his peruser an enigma contained different bits. In any case, he gives signs to encourage this riddle unraveling. The rationale behind this activity appears to include his peruser all the more profoundly in the story. So previously mentioned contentions and bolstered proof obviously propose that time is absent in a basic sequential manner in the story however it is showed in irregular way and plot streams with the progression of the awareness of the storyteller and doesn't keep the standards and rule of ordered time. If an idea is more perfect than itââ¬â¢s possessor, that which is more perfect must have put it there. Just like physical causes of a stone containing what can be a stone in reality, it is applicable to the notion of ideas containing all that is reality or existent. This, although arguably non-transferable, makes an idea just as real. 2) This passage, for the most part, discusses what has been coined the Trademark argument, an attempt to prove the existence of God through an idea. Firstly, he forms what would come to be known asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The final cause is what the aim or purpose of the mug is, a successful receptacle to contain liquid. Finally, the formal cause, which intends to distinguish what makes the mug a mug, the features of this mug is its impermeable container, moulded cylindrically and its handle. Together these make the total cause, but all of them in different ways contain reality despite their different states. Descartes also discusses the apparent impossibility of an effect (in any form) not owing its reality to anything. Nothing cannot be the cause of something; for reality of any degree owes its reality to that which is itââ¬â¢s cause; and that cause contains or possesses the degree of reality (or more) that it produces. This is also how ideas work, according to Descartes. Ideas have been placed by that which produces those things and that which can conceive reality of. Just because an idea doesnââ¬â¢t contain physical, formal, or actual reality, its not any less real; it is simply a transferral of the reality. Before presenting Descartes given example, it is important to discuss the technical imagery he projects using terms like formal or objective reality. Reality is not a black and white subject; it can be broken down into degrees or types where some things appear to be more real, or contain more reality, than other. Formal reality is virtuous of what it is whether that is finite or infinite substances or modes, all varying in degree. (Lacayo) Doles speech and especially the rebuttals to it raise many questions central to the debate over violence in film: is violence destructive to impressionable viewers, is violence critical to the success of the industry, does violence have aesthetic value, who decides what is violent, and if something is found to be violent, should it be banned? By going beyond Doles speech to carefully examine these questions, it is found thatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Taking this into account, it is no coincidence that Dole selected The Lion King, Forrest Gump, and True Lies, all huge money earners, as his films that represent exemplary family films. (Lacayo) Viewed purely as an industry, violent content is vital to the success of current feature films; to bacco and alcohol companies produce and sell products that are proven to have negative effects, yet are allowed to continue selling. There is no concrete evidence regarding the effects of violent content in film, so how could an entire industry be penalized for speculation. However, to view this situation in terms of money only would seem cold-hearted, so other variables must be taken into account. One such variable would be the question of whether film violence has actual aesthetic value, specifically if it has artistic worth. One would be hard pressed to argue that violence is not entertainment, the high grosses and popularity these films generate disprove that theory at its core, at least from the standpoint of the public. Why do people watch scenes of extreme violence if not to be entertained? Perhaps people watch violence for its cathartic value, releasing emotion in a healthy manner by allowing the characters onscreen to act out their personal, as well as the audiences emotions. Or possibly, people watch for the stimuli they receive by watching such hyper-kinetic action. Maybe people watch to admire the stunts and special effectsShow MoreRelatedCorrelation Of Media Violence And Adhd Critique997 Words à |à 4 PagesThe Correlation of Media Violence and Childrenââ¬â¢s ADHD Critique This particular study was executed to bring insight into if whether or not violent media and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-related behaviors were related due to a specific gene in the body. Answer: Introduction The focus of this study is to understand the liability of tax for Stephanie, Ronald her husband and the liability of tax of Rogan Advertising, an organization established by Stephanie herself. In this respect, it is important to know the nucleus functions, which are allocated to Ronald and Stephanie, which requires proper evaluation with regard to the appropriate ITAA 1997 provisions. A considerable amount of profits is extracted from a contract agreement based from Brazil due to which both Ronald and Stephanie had to settle in Brazil for specific time period. The above information is gathered from the case information provided. Core problem Residency tax of stakeholders The primary concern is to ascertain the residency of tax for Ronald and Stephanie as they have been out of the country for a significant amount of time. The matter is important because the Australian resident income tax received from both foreign and domestic origins are taxed unlike tax residents of foreigners. The money obtained from them acts as a bestowal to computable income. The tests done to determine the residency of tax of these individuals according to TR 98/17 is as follows: Domicile Test The tax payer in concern should be flexible with conditions like; The taxpayer with respect to the 1982 Domicile Act must resume being a resident of Australia. The fixed house of the persons connected will not move from Australia to somewhere else. Reside Test This test is based on the court judgements and the tax ruling tribunals to ascertain the status of tax residency of visitors who do not acquire Australian domicile (Woellner, 2015). 183 Day Test The test is done for people who are not tourists. The two important conditions to comply with for clearing this test are: The concerned taxpayer requires living for a period of 183 days minimum in Australia. The taxpayer should expect to live in Australia in the near future. If one fails to meet any one of these criteria, then they will not pass this test (Sadie et. al., 2015). Superannuation Test The mentioned test is only for the government officers of Australia working outside Australian territory, Tax residency is calculated based on benefaction to the assigned superannuation fund with negligence to the other conditions discussed above (Coleman, 2011). In light of the mentioned examinations and the relevant information, the tax residency status for Ronald and Stephanie needs to be calculated for FY2016 and FY2017. The appropriate test in Stephanies case will be Domicile Test. This is because both Ronald and Stephanie are from Australia and so will have an Australian domicile. Now the important factor to be taken into account is whether the shifting of couples to Brazil really changes the status in permanent abode. In respect with Income Tax 2650, an estimated living of two years or less is thought to be transitory while two years or greater in thought to be permanent. The estimated time limit of staying for the couple is thought to be near 1.5 years. Moreover, the abode in Australia is given out for lease and not sold and the bank account in Australia is working for the whole time period where payment of rent is credited. The settlement for the lectures is transferred into the Australian account. The professional allies are also preserved with Australia as the stakeholders predict the business to evolve when they return. So, the wish to come back to Australia after the work gets over is imminent (Deutsch et. al,, 2015). Thus the need for the calculation of the tax for Stephanie and Ronald are important. Stephanie The estimated calculation of income for FY2016 is as shown below. Annual remuneration from Rogan Advertising = $ 80,000 The said income is regarded as normal income in correspondence with Section 6(5) of ITAA 1997 because it is calculated from employment/business. As she is a tax resident and so income from employment from foreign sources will be computable. Estimating that Stephanie has a share of 50% in the house thus 50% of payment of rent will be normal income. Rent receipts = (450/2)*52 = $ 11,700 Computable income from Monash University = $ 24,000 It is also in knowledge that any income of the organization after subtracting the expenses will be given out as dividends but the information about the income and expenditure of the organization is not provided, it is thought that the company does not make any profits and breaks even for both FY2016 and FY2017. Total computable income for FY2016= 80000 + 11700 + 24000 = $ 115,700 Total computable income for FY2017 = Employment income + Rent income (depending upon the exact date of arrival) + Unfranked dividends from the organization (predicted to be zero) Expecting that both will come back home by on 31st October 2016, the payment of lease will be receivable for 17 weeks. Hence, computable income for FY2017 = 80000 + 17*(450/2) = $ 83,825 Ronald The estimable income for Ronald would essentially comprise of the information comprising of his tax status as an Australian for both the years. Income from Employment from Rogan Advertisement ($ 80,000 pa) Income from Rent according to the stake in the house (Assumed to be 50% thus $ 225 per week) Interest credited to account in Australia (predicted to be zero). Interest ctredited to joint account in Brazil (predicted to be zero). Unfranked dividends to 50% of the net profits of the organization (estimated to be zero as no data is available on income and losses). The above said information will be normal income as per Section 6(5) of ITAA 1997, Thus, computable income in FY2016 = 80000 + (450/2)*52 = $ 91,700 Computable income in FY2017 = 80000 + 17*(450/2) = $ 83,825 Rogan Advertising The desired company is Australian since both the owners of the organization are Australian themselves. This reason enables the company to obtain variety of reductions in the profit obtained to reach at the estimated income for each of the year FY2016 and FY2017. Information Required The following information is necessary. Exact date of return for the couple Income from interest received on the bank account of Australia and from Brazilian Account. Reports of the financial part of the organization, to calculate the unfranked dividends to be paid to both Ronald and Stephanie. Share of ownership for both individuals about the house in Australia. The actual date of lecture in Monash University in Brazil. The preparation of house in Brazil and to calculate whether any fixed assets has been obtained or not. The management team needs to get involved in Roger Advertising when both Stephanie and Ronald are in Brazil. Narayan. Which story do you prefer and why?In all the stories and authors featured in quot;Global Talesquot;, R.K. Narayan is the most respected and well-known author. From the short description of him at the end of the book, he created a space for himself called quot;Malgudiquot; and developed his own characters, like a puppet master making his own puppets from cloth and giving them life when he does the show. His stories are universal, probably because the themes and characters of the stories are easy to identify with. He should be ninety-seven this year (year 2000). From what I know, his other books include quot; Malgudi Daysquot;, where quot; An Astrologers Day;quot; is taken from. Narayan is a very observant man, sharp and sarcastic at the same time. His sarcasm become humour and it is not very obvious sometimes. We have to read between the lines to catch the joke. He is very descriptive in his writing and his world comes alive with t he mood through the informative and colourful description, the characteristics and the internal thinkings of the characters, the suspense and the dialogues used. I especially admire the way he brings the story to a close, not too dramatic, yet satisfactory. Some writers often leave an unfinished ending where it is up to the reader to decide, treating this as their style and adding a sense of mystery to the story. However, these are sometimes the most horrible kind of ending, not only irritating, but also annoying. The ending is the element that wraps up the whole story, yet the writer left it out, like a jigsaw piece went missing. It is not a complete piece of writing. Lastly, I find R.K. Narayan to be naughty at times, from the way he phrased his sentence, and the sarcasm, but we like it. In ;quot; An Astrologers Dayquot;, an astrologer meets a stranger and tells his fortune. Surprisingly, the quot;fakequot; astrologer managed to tell what was true for the stranger. Then, it is onl y when the astrologer reveals his secret, did we know how his quot;magicquot; worked. We are brought into the world of the streets of India where there is little lighting but quot;a bewildering cris-cross of light rays and moving shadowsquot;. The in-depth description gives us the setting, which can be seen in our minds. Not only using the sense of sight and sound, Narayan also gives us the face of the astrologer with a forehead quot;resplendent with sacred ash and vermilionquot;, having eyes that quot; sparkled with a sharp abnormal gleamquot; and a quot;painted foreheadquot; and quot;dark whiskersquot;, topping it off with a quot;saffron-coloured turbanquot;. The colourful astrologer contrasts with its semi-dark surroundings, attracting the customers like ;quot;bees are attracted to cosmos or dahlia stalks;quot;. We should not only focus on plot, we should also focus on the setting too. On the other hand, the introduction to ;quot;Crime and Punishment;quot; did not have the variet y of colours as seen in ;quot; An Astrologers Dayquot;. quot;Crime and Punishmentquot;, a story about an impatient teacher who slapped his student on impulse, then was exploited by the child, resulting in an unexpected ending later. In quot;Crime and Punishmentquot;, we do not get a detailed description, only a brief description about the boy as quot; all dimples, smiles and sweetness-only wings lackingquot;. The nursery is mentioned but not in detail as compared to quot;An Astrologers Day;quot;. ;quot;Crime and Punishment;quot; focus more on character, in contrast to the focus on setting in ;quot; An Astrologers Dayquot;. The moods are different in these two stories. In quot; An Astrologers Day;quot;, it is heavy with mystery and amazement while in quot;Crime and Punishmentquot;; it is more relaxing and light. On similarities, humour and language of the two are evident. For style, R.K. Narayan used humour and old language to bring out the unique element of the story. The story is mos tly sarcastic and subtle, sometimes added with a pinch of irony, like quot;when he told the person before him, In many ways, you are not getting the fullest results of your efforts, nine out of ten were disposed to agree with him. Or he gave an analysis of character: Most of your troubles are due to your nature. How can you be otherwise with Saturn where he is? You have an impetuous nature and a rough exterior. This endeared him to their hearts immediately, for even the mildest of us loves to think that he has a forbidding exterior;quot;. Narayan is mocking at peoples naivety and stupidity, especially the fortune about Saturn, as it is nothing but rubbish. In quot; Crime and Punishmentquot;, the boy is described to be quot;a little angel, all dimples, smiles and sweetnessonly wings lackingquot;, which is very sarcastic as the boy is not a little angel but a boy who blackmailed his teacher. The old language that Narayan used sometimes makes the readers confused. Words like quot;contr arinessquot;, quot;wholesome (slap)quot; and quot;dull desperationquot; are not commonly used in modern stories. This can be quite difficult, as we are not used to the language. Despite its similarities and differences, they are two stories which readers will enjoy. The plot, climax and the role reversal are important elements of the stories. Role reversal is an interesting element as one character becomes another, their actions are different from their usual selves, giving the readers a good laugh and add on to the irony of the story. Most of the characters have no names, thus it can be any teacher or boy, making Narayans stories universal and popular. Another special element is that we pick up clues along the way, like how the astrologer came to know of Guru Nayaks past and why the boy is not a little angel or a healthy citizen as thought by the parents. In all, both are unique in their own way and its endings are memorable. Choosing between the two, I prefer quot;An Astrologers D ay;quot; due to its exciting plot, building up climax and the clues along the story. The plot is like a jigsaw puzzle, giving us pieces of jigsaws (clues) like the astrologer quot;had left his village without any previous thought or planquot; and quot;caught a glimpse of his face (stranger) by the match lightquot;. They all seemed to refer to the astrologers past and his looking at the stranger, all so normal and not so obvious. This adds to the excitement of deciphering and reading between the lines. I especially admire the astrologers intelligence and sharpness for his quot;working analysis of mankinds troubles;quot; and his ;quot;matter of study, practice and shrewd guess work;quot; as he was not only calm in hiding his initial panic when seeing the person he killed years ago to be alive, he managed to use his wits to con Guru Nayak of his money using the advantage that Guru Nayak does not recognize him due to the lack of lighting and the astrologers make-up. This is the irony: G uru Nayak is paying money to the enemy he is looking for when he is supposed to take revenge by beating him to a pulp. By picking up clues along the way, it builds up the curiosity and climax of the story. This element is not easily found in ;quot;Crime and Punishment;quot;. This, thus, keeps us in suspense and excitement. There is also an elaborate description of the place and the astrologer to give us the picture of the setting in our mind. This is not easy as not every story/writer is capable of, yet the details made us feel as if we are looking and following the story at the astrologers stall, like watching a movie. The author skillfully misleads us to believe that the astrologers action of killing the man to be justified calling the astrologer ;quot;our friend;quot; and describing the stranger to be grumpy (;quot;grumbled some vague reply), rude (;quot;you call yourself an astrologer?;quot;) and violent (;quot;Answer this and go. Otherwise I will not let you go till you disgorg e all your coins;quot;), making the astrologer look like the good guy and the stranger to be the big bad wolf. However, the astrologers action of murder cannot be justified or taken lightly as he nearly killed a man, it is only natural for the victim to seek revenge as he was left for dead. Murder is murder, committing murder when drunk is still a crime, thus I detest the astrologer for being a coward, running away and killing the man. However, I believe the astrologer had been regretful and guilty for killing the man (quot;Do you know a great load is gone from me today?quot;), thus I sympathesized and pitied the astrologer for this. Using the clues, I did some guess-work and was not surprised by the astrologers revelation, but what surprised me is the irony that the man had cheated the astrologer by giving less annas while the astrologer cheated Guru Nayak by telling him that his enemy ;quot;was crushed under a lorry;quot; and to ;quot;never travel southward again;quot;. Both of th em resorted to cheating, a common characteristic, probably the reason why both had a bad quarrel while gambling. .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 , .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .postImageUrl , .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 , .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771:hover , .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771:visited , .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771:active { border:0!important; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771:active , .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771 .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0011ee6d1a9ec0f7b4e48862137de771:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Genetics Essay Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102301255691821414noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-597297064792177822.post-38086105208771095832020-04-17T17:47:00.001-07:002020-04-17T17:47:03.621-07:00Unusual Article Uncovers the Deceptive Practices of Examples of Bad Research Papers Unusual Article Uncovers the Deceptive Practices of Examples of Bad Research Papers Feedback from preceding clients might be positive, but should you know of somebody who has actually employed the service and got a paper they were delighted with, you might want to assess their work. They set two rats in cages side by side, and of the two one was furtive, timid and small, and the other was glossy, bold and big. Now what food do we feed women as artists upon? Virginia Woolf, A Room of Ones Own The dialectical tension between self and world is the location of meaning in Sylvia Plaths late poems. Characterized by a conflict between stasis and movement, isolation and engagement, these poems are largely about what stands in the way of the possibility of rebirth for the self. In Totem, she writes: There is no terminus, only suitcases / Out of which the same self unfolds like a suit / Bald and shiny, with pockets of wishes / Notions and tickets, short circuits and folding mirrors. While in the early poems the self was often imaged in terms of its own possibilities for transformation, in the post-Colossus poems the self is more often seen as trapped within a closed cycle. One movesbut only in a circle and continuously back to the same starting point. Rather than the self and the world, the Ariel poems record the self in the world. Sylvia Plaths sense of entrapment, her sense that her choices are profoundly limited, is directly connected to the particular time and place in which she wrote her poetry. Betty Friedan describes the late fifties and early sixties for American women as a comfortable concentration campphysically luxurious, mentally oppressive and impoverished. The recurring metaphors of fragmentation and reificationthe abstraction of the individualin Plaths late poetry are socially and historically based. They are images of Nazi concentration camps, of fire and bombs through the roof (The Applicant), of cannons, of trains, of wars, wars, wars (Daddy). And they are images of kitchens, iceboxes, adding machines, typewriters, and the depersonalization of hospitals. The sea and the moon are still important images for Plath, but in the Ariel poems they have taken on a harsher quality. The moon, also, is merciless, she writes in Elm. While a painfully acute sense of the depersonalization and fragmentation of 1950s America is characteristic of Ariel, three poems describe particularly well the social landscape within which the I of Sylvia Plaths poems is trapped: The Applicant, Cut, and The Munich Mannequins. The Applicant is explicitly a portrait of marriage in contemporary Western culture. However, the courtship and wedding in the poem represe nt not only male/female relations but human relations in general. That job seeking is the central metaphor in The Applicant suggests a close connection between the capitalist economic system, the patriarchal family structure, and the general depersonalization of human relations. Somehow all interaction between people, and especially that between men and women, given the history of the use of women as items of barter, seems here to be conditioned by the ideology of a bureaucratized market place. However this system got started, both men and women are implicated in its perpetuation. As in many of Plaths poems, one feels in reading The Applicant that Plath sees herself and her imaged personae as not merely caught invictims ofthis situation, but in some sense culpable as well. In The Applicant, the poet is speaking directly to the reader, addressed as you throughout. We too are implicated, for we too are potential applicants. People are described as crippled and as dismembered pieces of bodies in the first stanza of The Applicant. Thus imagery of dehumanization begins the poem. Moreover, the pieces described here are not even flesh, but a glass eye, false teeth or a crutch, / A brace or a hook, / Rubber breasts or a rubber crotch. We are already so involved in a sterile and machine-dominated culture that we are likely part artifact and sterile ourselves. One is reminded not only of the imagery of other Plath poems, but also of the controlling metaphor of Ken Keseys One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, written at about the same time as The Applicantin 1962, and Chief Bromdens conviction that those people who are integrated into society are just collections of wheels and cogs, smaller replicas of a smoothly functioning larger social machine. The ward is a factory for the Combine, Bromden thinks. Something that came all twisted different is now a functioning, adjusted component, a credit to the whole outfit and a marvel to behold. Watch him sliding across the land with a welded grin . . . In stanza two of The Applicant, Plath describes the emptiness which characterizes the applicant and which is a variant on the roboticized activity of Keseys Adjusted Man. Are there stitches to show somethings missing? she asks. The applicants hand is empty, so she provides a hand To fill it and willing To bring teacups and roll away headaches And do whatever you tell it Will you marry it? Throughout the poem, people are talked about as parts and surfaces. The suit introduced in stanza three is at least as alive as the hollow man and me chanical doll woman of the poem. In fact, the suit, an artifact, has more substance and certainly more durability than the person to whom it is offered in marriage. Ultimately, it is the suit which gives shape to the applicant where before he was shapeless, a junk heap of fragmented parts. I notice you are stark naked. How about this suit Black and stiff, but not a bad fit. Will you marry it? It is waterproof, shatterproof, proof Against fire and bombs through the roof. Believe me, theyll bury you in it. The man in the poem is finally defined by the black suit he puts on, but the definition of the woman shows her to be even more alienated and dehumanized. While the man is a junk heap of miscellaneous parts given shape by a suit of clothes, the woman is a wind-up toy, a puppet of that black suit. She doesnt even exist unless the black suit needs and wills her to. Will you marry it? It is guaranteed To thumb shut your eyes at the end And dissolve of sorrow. We make new stock from the salt. The woman in the poem is referred to as it. Like the man, she has no individuality, but where his suit gives him form, standing for the role he plays in a bureaucratic society, for the work he does, the only thing that gives the woman form is the institution of marriage. She does not exist before it and dissolves back into nothingness after it. In The Applicant there is at least an implication that something exists underneath the mans black suit; that however fragmented he is, he at least marries the suit and he at least has a choice. In contrast, the woman is the role she plays; she does not exist apart from it. Naked as paper to start, Plath writes, But in twenty-five years shell be silver, In fifty, gold. A living doll, everywhere you look. It can sew, it can cook. It can talk, talk, talk. The man, the type of a standard issue corporation junior executive, is also alienated. He has freedom of choice only in comparison to the much more limited situation of the woman. That is to say, he has relative freedom of choice in direct proportion to his role as recognized worker in the economic structure of his society. This should not imply, however, that this man is in any kind of satisfying and meaningful relation to his work. The emphasis in The Applicant upon the mans surfacehis black suittogether with the opening question of the poem (First, are you our sort of person? ) suggests that even his relationship to his work is not going to be in any sense direct or satisfying. It will be filtered first through the suit of clothes, then through the glass eye and rubber crotch before it can reach the real human being, assuming there is anything left of him. The woman in the poem is seen as an appendage; she works, but she works in a realm outside socially recognized labor. She works for the man in the black suit. She is seen as making contact with the world only through the medium of the man, who is already twice removed. This buffering effect is exacerbated by the fact that the man is probably not engaged in work that would allow him to feel a relationship to the product of his labor. He is probably a bureaucrat of some kind, and therefore his relationship is to pieces of paper, successive and fragmented paradigms of the product (whatever it is, chamberpots or wooden tables) rather than to the product itself. And of course, the more buffered the man is, the more buffered the woman is, for in a sense her real relationship to the world of labor is that of consumer rather than producer. Therefore, her only relationship to socially acceptable productionas opposed to consumptionis through the man. In another sense, however, the woman is not a consumer, but a commodity. Certainly she is seen as a commodity in this poem, as a reward only slightly less important than his black suit, which the man receives for being our sort of person. It can be argued that the man is to some extent also a commodity; yet just as he is in a sense more a laborer and less a consumer than the womanat least in terms of the social recognition of his positionso in a second sense he is more a consumer and less a commodity than the woman. And when we move out from the particularly flat, paper-like image of the woman in the poem to the consciousness which speaks the poem in a tone of bitter irony, then the situation of the woman as unrecognized worker/recognized commodity becomes clearer. The man in The Applicant, because of the middle class bureaucratic nature of his work (one does not wear a new black suit to work in a steel mill or to handcraft a cabinet) and because of his position vis-a-vis the woman (her social existence depends upon his recognition), is more a member of an exploiting class than one which is exploited. There are some parts of his world, specifically those involving the woman, in which he can feel himself relatively in control and therefore able to understand his relationship to this world in a contemplative way. Thus, whatever we may think of the system he has bought into, he himself can see it as comparatively stable, a paradigm with certain static features which nevertheless allows him to move upward in an orderly fashion. Within the context of this poem, then, and within the context of the womans relationship to the man in the black suit, she is finally both worker and commodity while he is consumer. Her position is close to that of the Marxist conception of the proletariat. Fredric Jameson, in Marxism and Form, defines the perception of external objects and events which arises naturally in the consciousness of an individual who is simultaneously worker and commodity. Even before [the worker] posits elements of the outside world as objects of his thought, he feels himself to be an object, and this initial alienation within himself takes precedence over everything else. Yet precisely in this terrible alienation lies the strength of the workers position: his first movement is not toward knowledge of the work but toward knowledge of himself as an object, toward self-consciousness. Yet this self-consciousness, because it is initially knowledge of an object (himself, his own labor as a commodity, his life force which he is under obligation to sell), permits him more genuine knowledge of the commodity nature of the outside world than is granted to middle-class objectivity. For [and here Jameson quotes Georg Lukacs in The History of Class Consciousness] his consciousness is the self-consciousness of merchandise itself . . . This dual consciousness of self as both subject and object is characteristic of the literature of minority and/or oppressed classes. It is characteristic of the proletarian writer in his (admittedly often dogmatic) perception of his relation to a decadent past, a dispossessed present, and a utopian future. It is characteristic of black American writers; W. E. B. Du Bois makes a statement very similar in substance to Jamesons in The Souls of Black Folk, and certainly the basic existential condition of Ellisons invisible man is his dual consciousness which only toward the end of that novel becomes a means to freedom of action rather than paralysis. It is true of contemporary women writers, of novelists like Doris Lessing, Margaret Atwood, and Rita Mae Brown, and of poets like Denise Levertov, Adrienne Rich, and Marge Piercy. In a sense, it is more characteristic of American literature than of any other major world literature, for each immigrant group, however great its desire for assimilation into the American power structure, initially possessed this dual consciousness. Finally, a dialectical perception of self as both subject and object, both worker and commodity, in relation to past and future as well as present, is characteristic of revolutionary literature, whether the revolution is political or cultural. Sylvia Plath has this dialectical awareness of self as both subject and object in particular relation to the society in which she lived. The problem for her, and perhaps the main problem of Cold War America, is in the second aspect of a dialectical consciousnessan awareness of oneself in significant relation to past and future. The first person narrator of what is probably Plaths best short story, Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams, is a clerk/typist in a psychiatric clinic, a self-described dream connoisseur who keeps her own personal record of all the dreams which pass through her office, and who longs to look at the oldest record book the Psychoanalytic Institute possesses. This dream book was spanking new the day I was born, she says, and elsewhere makes the connection even clearer: The clinic started thirty-three years agothe year of my birth, oddly enough. This connection suggests the way in which Plath uses history and views herself in relation to it. The landscape of her late work is a contemporary social landscape. It goes back in time to encompass such significant historical events as the Rosenberg trial and executionthe opening chapter of The Bell Jar alludes dramatically to these eventsand of course it encompasses, is perhaps obsessed with, the major historical event of Plaths time, the second world war. But social history seems to stop for Plath where her own life starts, and it is replaced at that point by a mythic timeless past populated by creatures from folk tale and classical mythology. This is not surprising, since as a woman this poet had little part in shaping history. Why should she feel any relation to it? But more crucially, there is no imagination of the future in Sylvia Plaths work, no utopian or even antiutopian consciousness. In her poetry there is a dialectical consciousness of the self as simultaneously object and subject, but in her particular social context she was unable to develop a consciousness of herself in relation to a past and future beyond her own lifetime. This foreshortening of a historical consciousness affects in turn the dual consciousness of self in relation to itself (as subject) and in relation to the world (as object). It raises the question of how one accounts objectively for oneself. For instance, if I am involved in everything I see, can I still be objective and empirical in my perception, free from myth and language? Finally, this foreshortening of historical consciousness affects the question of whether the subject is a function of the object or vice versa. Since the two seem to have equal possibilities, this last question is never resolved. As a result, the individual feels trapped; and in Sylvia Plaths poetry one senses a continual struggle to be reborn into some new present which causes the perceiving consciousness, when it opens its eyes, to discover that it has instead (as in Lady Lazarus) made a theatrical / Comeback in broad day / To the same place, the same face, the same brute / Amused shout: A miracle! This difficulty in locating the self and the concomitant suspicion that as a result the self may be unreal are clear in poems like Cut, which describe the self-image of the poet as paper. The ostensible occasion of Cut is slicing ones finger instead of an onion; the first two stanzas of the poem describe the cut finger in minute and almost naturalistic detail. There is a suppressed hyst eria here which is only discernible in the poems curious mixture of surrealism and objectivity. The images of the poem are predominantly images of terrorism and war, immediately suggested to the poet by the sight of her bleeding finger: out of a gap / A million soldiers run, Saboteur / Kamikaze man, and finally, trepanne d veteran. The metaphors of war are extensive, and, though suggested by the actual experience, they are removed from it. In the one place in the poem where the speaker mentions her own feelings as a complete entity (apart from but including her cut finger) the image is of paper. She says, O my Homunculus, I am ill. I have taken a pill to kill The thin Papery feeling. Paper often stands for the self-image of the poet in the post-Colossus poems. It is used in the title poem of Crossing the Water, where the two black cut-paper people appear less substantial and less real than the solidity and immensity of the natural world surrounding them. In the play Three Women, the Secretary says of the men in her office: there was something about them like cardboard, and now I had caught it. She sees her own infertility as directly related to her complicity in a bureaucratic, impersonal, male-dominated society. Paper is symbolic of our particular socioeconomic condition and its characteristic bureaucratic labor. It stands for insubstantiality; the paper model of something is clearly less real than the thing itself, even though in developed economies the machines, accoutrements, and objects appear to have vitality, purpose, and emotion, while the people are literally colorless, objectified, and atrophied. The paper self is therefore part of Plaths portrait of a depersonalized society, a bureaucracy, a paper world. In A Life (Crossing the Water), she writes: A woman is dragging her shadow in a circle / About a bald hospital saucer. / It resembles the moon, or a sheet of blank paper / And appears to have suffered a private blitzkrieg. In Tulips the speaker of the poem, also a hospital patient, describes herself as flat, ridiculous, a cut-paper shadow / Between the eye of the sun and the eyes of the tulips. In The Applicant, the woman is again described as paper: Naked as paper to start / But in twenty-five years shell be silver, / In fifty, gold. Here in Cut, the thin, / Papery feeling juxtaposes her emotional dissociation from the wound to the horrific detail of the cut and the bloody images of conflict it suggests. It stands for her sense of depersonalization, for the separation of self from self, and is juxtaposed to that devaluation of human life which is a necessary precondition to war, the separation of society from itself. In this context, it is significant that one would take a pill to kill a feeling of substancelessness and depersonalization. Writing about American women in the 1950s, Betty Friedan asks, Just what was the problem that had no name? What were the words women used when they tried to express it? Sometimes a woman would say, I feel empty somehow . . . incomplete. Or she would say, I feel as if I dont exist. Sometimes she blotted out the feeling with a tranquilizer. A papery world is a sterile world; this equation recurs throughout the Ariel poems. For Sylvia Plath, stasis and perfection are always associated with sterility, while fertility is associated with movement and process. The opening lines of The Munich Mannequins introduce this equation. Perfection is terrible, Plath writes, it cannot have children. / Cold as snow breath, it tamps the womb / Where the yew trees blow like hydras. The setting of The Munich Mannequins is a city in winter. Often, Plaths poems have imaged winter as a time of rest preceding rebirth (Wintering, Frog Autumn), but only when the reference point is nature. The natural world is characterized in Sylvia Plaths poems by process, by the ebb and flow of months and seasons, by a continu al dying and rebirth. The moon is a symbol for the monthly ebb and flow of the tides and of a womans body. The social world, however, the world of the city, is both male defined and separated from this process. In the city, winter has more sinister connotations; it suggests death rather than hibernation. Here the cold is equated with the perfection and sterility to which the poems opening lines refer. Perfection stands in The Munich Mannequins for something artificially created and part of the social world. The poem follows the male quest for perfection to its logical endmannequins in a store windowlifeless and mindless in their sulphur loveliness, in their smiles. The mannequins contrast with the real woman in the same way that the city contrasts with the moon. The real woman is not static but complicated: The tree of life and the tree of life Unloosing their moons, month after month, to no purpose. The blood flood is the flood of love, The absolute sacrifice However, in Munich, morgue between Paris and Rome, the artificial has somehow triumphed. Women have become mannequins or have been replaced by mannequins, or at least mannequins seem to have a greater reality because they are more ordered and comprehensible than real women. It is appropriate that Plath should focus on the middle class of a German city, in a country where fascism was a middle class movement and women allowed themselves to be idealized, to be perfected, to be made, essentially, into mannequins. In The Munich Mannequins, as in The Applicant, Plath points out the deadening of human beings, their disappearance and fragmentation and accretion into the objects that surround them. In The Applicant the woman is a paper doll; here she has been replaced by a store window dummy. In The Applicant all that is left of her at the end is a kind of saline solution; in The Munich Mannequins the only remaining sign of her presence is the domesticity of these windows / The baby lace, the green-leaved confectionery. And where the man in The Applicant is described in terms of his black suit, here the men are described in terms of their shoes, present in the anonymity of hotel corridors, where Hands will be opening doors and setting Down shoes for a polish of carbon Into which broad toes will go tomorrow. People accrete to their things, are absorbed into their artifacts. Finally, they lose all sense of a whole self and become atomized. Parts of them connect to their shoes, parts to their suits, parts to their lace curtains, parts to their iceboxes, and so on. There is nothing left; people have become reified and dispersed into a cluttered artificial landscape of their own production. Because the world she describes is a place created by men rather than women (since men are in control of the forces of production), Plath sees men as having ultimate culpability for this state of affairs which affects both men and women. But men have gone further than this in their desire to change and control the world around them. In The Munich Mannequins man has finally transformed woman into a puppet, a mannequin, something that reflects both his disgust with and his fear of women. A mannequin cannot have children, but neither does it have that messy, terrifying, and incomprehensible blood flow each month. Mannequins entirely do away with the problems of female creativity and self-determination. Trapped inside this vision, therefore, the speaker of the Ariel poems sees herself caught between nature and society, biology and intellect, Dionysus and Apollo, her self definition and the expectations of others, as between two mirrors. Discussion of the Ariel poems has often centered around Sylvia Plaths most shocking images. Yet her images of wars and concentration camps, of mass and individual violence, are only the end result of an underlying depersonalization, an abdication of people to their artifacts, and an economic and social structure that equates people and objects. Like the paper doll woman in The Applicant, Sylvia Plath was doubly alienated from such a world, doubly objectified by it, and as a woman artist, doubly isolated within it. Isolated both from a past tradition and a present community, she found it difficult to structure new alternatives for the future. No wonder her individual quest for rebirth failed as it led her continuously in a circle back to the same self in the Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102301255691821414noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-597297064792177822.post-85309458427278658232020-04-12T18:24:00.001-07:002020-04-12T18:24:04.515-07:00Critical Essay On Sir Gawain And The Green KnightCritical Essay On Sir Gawain And The Green KnightWriting a critical essay on subjects in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is not easy. It occupies a valuable strategic position between the Southern Alps, the Northern Adriatic and the edge of the Central European Pannonian Plain. Slovenia shares a border with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Traffic from South-Western Europe crosses Slovenian territory on its way towards the landlocked countries of Central Europe, including Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the former Soviet republics. Traditionally the port of Koper has served as a route to the Adriatic for Austria and Germany. Slovenia has the image of a country ââ¬ËThat is between Russia and Prussiaââ¬â¢ (FW Carter HT Norris. ââ¬ËThe Changing Face of the Balkansââ¬â¢ P26). This is descriptive of the fact that Sloveniaââ¬â¢s borders lie between the Germanic and Slavonic territories and has been heavily influenced by Latin traditions. Slovenes initially lost their independence more than a thousand years ago, when Prince Kocelj established the first state of Slovenes. This state was subsequently ruled by successive Bavarian, Frankish, Czech and Habsburg masters. In 1355 it became wholly part of the hereditary possessions of the Habsburg monarchy, and remained as such until the end of the First World War in 1918, when Slovenia became a constituent of the Kingdome of Serbs Croats and Slovenes, known from 1929 onwards as Yugoslavia. The history of Slovenia shows that for centuries the institutional government of the country was identical to that of Austria, and this Germanic influence had an important effect on Slovenian culture. Christianity had a strong influence, and yet, despite these powerful influences, the Slovenian people retained a strong Slavic identity, including the retention of their own language. Slovenia also remains ethnically homogenous, with about 90% of the population Slovenes, and the remainder mostly Serbian, Croatian, Hungarian and Italian, along with a small Muslim population. This ethnic homogeneity, and also the retention of a distinctly Slovenian culture is due in large part, according to historians such as James Gow and Cathie Carmichael, to the fact that, throughout history Slovenia acted more as a bridge between nations, rather than a crossroads or area of co-operation between different nations and cultures. In modern times, as part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), post World War 2, Slovenia enjoyed a high level of industrialisation and a limited market economy, along with open borders with Italy and Austria. The rapid post war economic growth in Slovenia led to an influx of ââ¬Ëguest workersââ¬â¢ from the less developed parts of SFRY, and by the time of secession from the federation in 1991, with 8.2% of the total Yugoslavian population, Slovenia accounted for 20% of the GDP of SFRY, with productivity twice as high as in Yugoslavia as a whole. (FW Carter HT Norris. ââ¬ËThe Changing Face of the Balkansââ¬â¢ P112 table 31). This boom in Slovenia was set against the backdrop of the post-Tito disintegration of Communist Ideology in SFRY. Since the death of Josep Boris Tito, leader of Yugoslavia for 37 years, voices of dissent had become louder among the multicultural republics of the federation. Throughout the 1980ââ¬â¢s it became clear that a worsening economic crisis and the political inertia brought about by the inflexible institutions put in place by Tito, specifically to resist change, were causing a disaster in Yugoslavia. Rising ethnic friction in Kosovo and Bosnia, and the perceived failure of the federal model, was increasingly leading to (mostly Serbian) support for a return to centralisation. A condition that never really existed in Yugoslavia, where the six republics that made it up enjoyed much autonomy, and operated to a certain extent as ââ¬Ëmini statesââ¬â¢. The system was put in place to account for the different desires of the distinct nationalities that made up SFRY, and delive red limited political self determination. This system required two main prerequisites to succeed however. In disputes between the republics, a main arbiter was to have the final say. Tito was the arbiter, but after his death there was no effective replacement. Secondly there was a requirement for relative prosperity, and in the majority of Yugoslavia, this was failing. Indeed, in Montenegro ââ¬â¢30,000 desperate citizens took to the streets in August 1989 to protest against hunger and poverty and to demand effective actionââ¬â¢ (Sabrina Petra Ramet ââ¬ËBalkan Babelââ¬â¢ P223). The consensus in SFRY, by 1989, was that ââ¬Ë A new economic system requires a new political system, a new economic system cannot be built in the framework of the old system.ââ¬â¢ (Ciril Ribcic ââ¬ËMladinaââ¬â¢ September 1989). The ââ¬ËOld Systemââ¬â¢ was being held together from Belgrade by the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (LCY), led since 1987 by Slobodan Milosevic. His leadership had stifled any consensus between the federal nations, and had essentially split the country into four emerging states, while annexing the provinces of Kosovo, Montenegro and Macedonia, to Serbia. According to some observers including Sabrina Ramet, Milosevicââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ intention was to re-centralise the system, at the expense of the autonomy of the other republics, who, to all intents and purposes were already autonomous, and by now most cultural links between the states were largely superficial. This climate allowed ideas to be voiced, that would not have been heard just few years before. For example Antonje Isakovic, a Serbian writer argued for the confederation of the system and the redrawing of the republic boundaries. The open discussion of such subjects in Slovenia led to the highly controversial move by the Slovenian assembly, their first uni-lateral manoeuvre, that granted the republic the right of secession, and the right to approve or disapprove the actions of federal authorities in the republic. These amendments were attacked in Serbia, where the popular support was for consolidation around a strong centre (Belgrade). The warning from Serbia to Slovenia was the same as the warning from the Soviet Union in the 1960ââ¬â¢s. That any break-up that took place without a federal consensus would result in a disastrous fratricidal conflict. The Slovenian public were mobilised for a confrontation with Belgrade by numerous publications, including ââ¬ËInter Aliaââ¬â¢ a protest at the status of the Slovenian language in SFRY. The first mass demonstrations, however, came with the trial of ââ¬ËThe Fourââ¬â¢. (Janez Jansa, Ivan Borstner, David Tusic, and Franzi Zavrl), who had published material in the magazine ââ¬ËMladinaââ¬â¢ that revealed a military plan to stop liberalism in Slovenia. The trial was carried out in Serbo-Croat, in Slovenia, and this inflamed the public further, leading to repeated demonstrations. The Slovene leadership, by now, were still hoping, publicly at least, that a quasi-confederal character would be preserved in SFRY, but with several important distinctions. Slovenia demanded, as the richest and most efficient republic, a special Slovenian Military Zone, with all the Slovenian recruits serving in Slovenian regiments and with Slovenian as the language of command. The other republics especially Serbia, were dismayed at the anti-federal stance of Slovenia, and declared the amendments illegal. Slovenia was undaunted though, and they went ahead and made their amendments. The events from now on will be the real focus of the dissertation. From the referendum in Slovenia in 1990 that passed with 88% in favour of independence, to the end of the fighting brought about by the Brioni Accord on 7th July 1991 there is much to be studied. The military campaign to resist the Yugoslav National Army (JNA) is an interesting one, with the Slovenes using a system that had been in place for years, but that was resurrected for this purpose. It proposed the use of an alternative command structure, known as ââ¬ËThe Manoeuvre Structure of National Protectionââ¬â¢ (Manervska Struktura Narodne Zascite MSNZ). This was a command structure unique to Slovenia, which allowed the government to form an emergency defence, similar to Britainââ¬â¢s Home Guard. The republic had previously had to resist efforts by Belgrade to disarm its federal territorial defence force (Territorialna Obrambra TO) after its free elections in 1990., and so the MSNZ served as a vital command st ructure. Of which the federal government was completely unaware. A superb account of this period is provided by the defence minister of the time, and current Prime Minister of Slovenia Janez Jansa, in his book ââ¬ËPremikiââ¬â¢ (Movements). He has published another book concerning the transitional period called ââ¬ËOkopiââ¬â¢ (The Barricades), and both offer a wonderful, factual, account of the conflict form a Slovenian perspective. There are a number of other notable figures who have already published their memoirs, particularly, Paule Celik, who published his thoughts in a series of interviews with Svetlana Vasovic-Mekina. This man was the head of the federal police force in Slovenia. Himself Slovenian, he has an interesting insight into the ââ¬Ëcloak and daggerââ¬â¢ style strategy of MSNZ. As well as this Celik points out that the Ten Day War was ââ¬ËFought on a much higher military and cultural levelââ¬â¢ (S Vasovic-Mekina ââ¬ËA Summer Interventionââ¬â¢ Vienna Digest 1994), than the subsequent conflicts. Celik had his police training and most of his career in Belgrade, so it is clear his recollections are even handed as to the causes and outcome of the war. Aside from the published primary accounts of the conflict, there also exists a publicly accessible archive, Arkiv Republike Slovenje, which provides information from the 9th century onwards, and resides in Ljubljana, the capital of Slove nia. The archive also carries a lot of material concerning the transition from federal to independent republic. A further interesting source will be the court papers from the war crimes trial of Slobodan Milosevic, which contain interesting and controversial comments concerning the Ten Day War. The actions of this man, and the events in Yugoslavia leading up to the war are of crucial importance in understanding and answering the dissertations question. There are many books covering this period, including ââ¬ËYugoslavia and Afterââ¬â¢ by Ivana Vejvoda, which presents contributions by leading authorities on the origins of the Balkan crisis and the decay of Yugoslavia, from a retrospective viewpoint. This is part of a series of books including ââ¬ËEye of the Stormââ¬â¢, which identifies Slovenia as a focal point for unrest in SFRY. Another excellent book is ââ¬ËLove Thy Neighbourââ¬â¢ by Peter Maas, which analyses what the author describes as the ââ¬Ëoverlookedââ¬â¢ subject of Slovene secession, and points out that the conflict is usually ignored in most analysis on what went on later in Bosnia and Croatia. He insists that it is the relative bloodlessness that accounts for this. He also makes the reader aware of the tacit, but perhaps symbiotic relationship between Slovene secessionists and Slobodan Milosevic. With Slovenia out of SFRY, Milosevic had a 4 to 3 majority in the Yugoslav presidency. The book also explores the fact that after Slovenia, the JNA became a more pro-Serbian force, as opposed the impartial force it had represented in SFRY. This book has particular value in its description of the military forces fielded in the war. A further important source is of course the personal recollections of Slovenian people who were present. The relatively recent events means that peoples memory of them is quite fresh, and this will be particularly useful with the issue of mobilisation of the people, which involved a carefully managed media campaign, in Slovenia and internationally. It is fortunate that many Slovenians speak English, so it will not be necessary to learn a new language to gather primary information, and much of the literature is also translated. The dissertation is intended to explore the question as to whether or not the Ten Day War resulted in a political victory or a military triumph, and in essence, what forces enabled the country to avoid the bloodshed that characterised the conflicts in Bosnia and Croatia. Official Slovenian sources, such as the Office of the Prime Minister, insist that this was a ââ¬ËDavid and Goliathââ¬â¢ style encounter, with the Slovenian TO waging a meticulously planned guerrilla campaign against the aggressive JNA, a military behemoth, then the fourth largest army in Europe. Other observers, such as Dyer, contend that the JNA had limited objectives in Slovenia. These objectives (Border crossings, airport) were predicted by the TO, and their limited forces were able to hold them long enough for diplomacy to take over. The year leading up to the conflict will also be studied. The activities of the popular magazine ââ¬ËMladinaââ¬â¢ and the pluralisation of politics in this period serves as a good barometer of the tensions that were rising at this time. By 1989 certain groups had sprung up in response to the uproar at the trial of the four Mladina journalists. The Independent Centre of Human Rights received thousands of petitions from individuals and organisations, including trade unions and religious groups. These actions were to encourage the public at large to join and start new political parties. There seems to have been a consensus reached in Slovenia, and the dissertation will explore this, as part of the argument that a political victory was won. The relative bloodlessness will also serve to illustrate this point, along with racial homogeneity, relative affluence and long standing economic and cultural ties with Central and Western Europe. Possible collusion between Ljubljana and Belgrade will be addressed, but this hypothesis is extremely controversial and would be tough to research. The influence of the EC will also be researched, with Germany already identified as at least one country interested in Slovenian independence. The military argument, that Slovenian forces repelled, or at the very least held on against the odds is to be explored by studying the many military analyses made of the war. The tactic of blocking the mountain roads in order to halt the armoured advance of the JNA is well documented, as is the subsequent limited guerrilla campaign and the method of replacing the federal military with the MSNZ. The smooth application of this tactic led to the world at large to see the JNA as aggressors, since Slovene troops at border crossings simply switched uniforms, forcing the JNA to use force to capture them. In order to better complete this task, the help of a dissertation supervisor will be utilised, in the case of this dissertation, the advice of Dr Christina Chiva. The summer would be spent visiting Slovenia, identifying further sources, perhaps carrying out interviews with relevant individuals, in order to bring as much information to the beginning of the year as possible. The writing process will begin once my proposal subject has been refined, since there is little doubt the scope of the dissertation will likely change, at least slightly, between proposal and submission of the final work. So, with an eye on the history of the final years of Yugoslavia, it is hoped that the question set out in this proposal can either be proved or disproved one way or another, in agreement with the military or political hypothesis, a mix of the two, or perhaps some third source of influence, as yet unconsidered. As a process, a situation makes it the responsibility of the learner to search for the problem without direct or indirect reference to the problem. Conversely, the product arising from the process of identifying the problem is also a problem because besides the presentation of the problem, raising crucial questions and identifying what is expected leads to a further problem to solve. Although dealing with life problems maybe outlined in simple and motivating steps, I understand that the intensity of one problem differs from that of another. Consequently, I would be wrong to say that I have an ideal way of dealing with all my problems. However, with the right questions for each problem, identifying the right approach is easier, even though it is labor intensive. I have come to understand that despite my student life being a high pressure and high stake situation, I have never had the right approach nor known the ultimate expectations of my academic writing. Actually, I have simplified by academic writing to fulfilling one of the instructorââ¬â¢s expectations. In some way, this approach has presented some pressure but, I have always performed just above average, and this is an indication that I missed some crucial steps. Average academic performance also implies that, my approach to the problem did not involve the hard work required to develop the complex idea in the problem. Consequently, I have failed to meet high achieverââ¬â¢s grades. In life situations, this would present me as a lesser competent person and could probably translate to less employability due to evident limitations in handling pressure. It is assumed that the developer is aware of the prevailing market rates but is not conversant with the costing strategy that can match the rates. The essence of this report is therefore to recommend the actions on whether the project is viable or not depending on the cost benefit analysis results (Schmitt, B., 2007). 3.0 Site Location Information The construction site is located in London, towards the south east of England. It has a conglomeration of retail constructions, residential and commercial properties. The environment is well developed and the area has easy accessibility to the center of London City. Also the inflation rates in the real estate property market could be a challenge however with the stability in the market the rates could be manageable to the stakeholders. Using the same assumptions, the future demand may be unbearable but the value of the project may be a great advantage to the stakeholders in the future. The high demand for land in the area and the continued rising rates is propelling the already high costs. 5.0 Developers Budget 5.1.
